Framed Hand-Colored Map of Washington, DC - Dated 1855

325.00

Hand-colored map from famed cartographer JH Colton showing Washington, DC and Georgetown (which was still a separate town at the time) in 1855. The map has major points highlighted in blueish green such as the Capitol, the White House, Smithsonian Institute, The National Observatory, the Navy Yard, the Arsenal, and Marine Hospital Square (site of RFK Stadium).

The boundaries of the city are confined to a much smaller footprint than the modern day city and the shoreline along the Potomac River are nearly unrecognizable. However, the street grid is virtually unchanged.

Map is in excellent condition while the frame shows a few signs of wear around the gold trim.

Frame measures 22"x19" and the map measures 15.5"x13"
